Online Safety

Please take the time to have a look at our new online safety parent cards.  These cards are written for parents and clearly & simply explain how to set up parental controls, block users, age restrictions and more.  We hope that they will be very supportive for your all.

If you have any questions about these or any element of online safety, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher or you can email our Digital Learning Leader: Mrs Briggs, at rushyict@rushymeadow.sutton.sch.uk.

This Week’s Learning – wb 08.05.23

In English, we have been exploring a story through film called ‘Taking Flight’. You can watch the film here: Taking Flight (takingflightfilm.com). We did some role play, explored the feelings of the characters and then looked at what makes a good story, focusing on how to entertain the reader through description and different sentence types (exclamations and questions). We then planned our own versions of the story and collected vocabulary to use in them.

In maths, we continued learning about money: comparing amounts, adding pence to make a pound and showing this in different ways, and solving problems involving receiving change.

In art, we sketched a flower in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe, ready to paint next week.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 15.05.23

This Week’s Learning – wb 24.04.23

In English, we have been reading the story ‘The Tear Thief’. We explored the story through drama and explored what the words meant in the story by discussing the similes and phrases used throughout. We then focussed on identifying the verbs and adverbs used to describe how the Tear Thief moves and expanded noun phrases to describe what she looks like and used these collected words and phrases to write a character description of the Tea Thief. At the end of the week, we discussed the features of diaries, focussing on past tense, first person, feelings and adverbs of time. This is in preparation for next week!

In maths, we have continued with our learning about time. We focussed this week on telling the time to quarter past, quarter to, half past and compared durations of time by working out how many minutes to minute hand had moved from one time to another. We also learnt there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day.

In science, we went on a plant hunt around school and used classification keys and pictures to identify what plants they were. We discussed whether they were wild or garden plant and then sorted pictures into venn diagrams to show this. You can see pictures in the gallery section. We also learnt about how seeds grow into mature plants.

In art, we have been colour mixing! We recapped our knowledge from Year 1 about which primary colours can be mixed to make secondary colours and then experimented with paint to see how we could vary the tone and create lighter and darker colours.

In music, we have been playing layered rhythms.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 01.05.23

In English, we will be planning a diary pretending we are the Tear Thief. We will then write these diaries before editing them.

In maths, we are starting our learning on money and will start by identifying which coins we use. We will then add pence and pounds together, along with adding a mixture of the two.

In science, we will be learning about how bulbs grow into mature plants.

In art, we will be learning about the work of artists who draw and paint flowers, focussing on Georgia O'Keeffe.

This Week’s Learning – wb 17.04.23

In English, we looked at the features of instructions and focussed on three areas: imperative (bossy) verbs (put, eat, place, close, flatten), adverbs of time (then, next after) and adverbs (carefully, slowly, gently). We then wrote instructions about how to plant a seed, thinking about how we planted them on Monday.

In science, we set up an experiment to test what plants need to grow and stay healthy. We set up 5 plants slightly differently: one had everything, one with no water, one with no soil, one with no light and one with a cold temperature. We will be filling in plant diaries throughout the term to monitor how they grow and see if our predictions are correct! You can see pictures of us planting our seeds in the gallery section.

In maths, we learnt how to read temperature, including numbers on a scale. We have then begun our learning on time, starting with o’clock and then ‘past the hour’ and ‘to the hour’. You can see lots of pictures in the gallery section!

In music, we have been playing simple rhythms with words.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 24.04.23

In English, we will be reading the ‘Tear Thief’. We will begin the week by exploring the text and language through role play and group work. We are then focussing on description in the story, mainly the verbs and adverbs. Children will write character descriptions of the Tear Thief and then begin to look at the features of a diary entry ready for the following week.

In maths, we will be continuing to learn how to read a clock to 5-minute intervals, quarter past, half past and quarter to.

In science, we will be going on a walk around the school grounds to see what plants we can spot and sort them into groups based on what they look like. We will have classification charts to help us identify what plants they might be. We will also be learning how seeds grow into mature plants.

In art, we will be experimenting with colour mixing using paint, recapping our knowledge of primary and secondary colours and then learning how to make colours lighter or darker.

In music, we will be playing layered rhythms to lead up to reading musical notes to play a layered rhythm on Soundshape.

In English, we have been reading a new story ‘The Koala who Could’. We explored the story by creating a story cube with information about the characters, settings, our favourite parts, the plot and also predictions about what might happen. We looked in more detail at the structure of the story and did some practise using conjunctions (when, if, because, that) to describe the setting. We then planned our own versions of the story, changing the animal to a different Australian one, and collected exciting language to use.

In maths, we have been learning about the properties of 3D shapes, including how many faces they have and what the shape of these faces are, along with the number of edges and vertices they have. We compared the shapes by sorting them according to these properties. We also begun our learning about measure, using a ruler to measure in cm and m.

In music, we learnt how to play a glockenspiel and had to follow a tune.

This Week’s Learning – wb 30.01.23

In history, we learnt about the significance of George Stephenson and how he became the ‘Father of the Railways’ when he created the first steam engine locomotive. In English, we explored the features of a recount and then wrote a recount for our trip to the London Transport Museum. You can see lots of pictures of our trip in the gallery section, where we got to ride on old buses and took part in some role play to the past where we were given tickets to board the world’s first underground electric train.

In maths, we have been exploring division using our times table facts (2s, 5s and 10s). We have been solving division problems by grouping and explored the relationship between multiplication and division.

In music, we continued to learn how to play boomwhackers!

Next Week’s Learning – wb 06.02.23

In art, we will be learning about the work of Stephen Wiltshire and creating our own piece of artwork in this style using charcoal. We will be writing newspaper reports about the sinking of the Titanic in English and learning about the history of flight and Amy Johnson in history. We will finish by reflecting upon everything we have learnt this term!

In maths, we will be exploring what happens when we have reminders after dividing into groups. Children will also be recognising parts and wholes which will lead into our fractions topic after half term.

In music, we are going to be continuing to learn how to play boomwhackers.

This Week’s Learning – wb 16.01.23

In history, we learnt about how different types of transport have changed over time and ordered them from oldest to newest on a timeline. We looked at cars in more detail and labelled the similarities and differences between one of the first cars ever invented with the cars we have today. In English, we pretended we had flown in car to a magical land! We have been describing this magical setting this week, starting off by thinking about what settings need and doing some role play in groups to explore what we could see, hear and smell. We then collected some vocabulary to describe this setting before writing our descriptions, focussing on expanded noun phrases and conjunctions.

In maths, we have been continuing with multiplication. We have learnt how to multiply using number lines and how to draw arrays (dots in rows and columns) to show a multiplication problem. We discussed how multiplication is commutative (meaning the numbers can be multiplied in any order) and solved a range of multiplication problems using the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

In music, we have begun to learn how to play boomwhackers!

Next Week’s Learning – wb 23.01.23

In English, we will be using our setting descriptions from this week to help us write an adventure story! We will be pretending to fly in our magic car to our land, thinking about what problems might occur whilst there. We will plan these stories before writing and then edit them with a partner to improve them. In history, we are learning about how trains have changed over time.

In maths, we will be learning how to double and halve numbers up to 100..

In music, we are going to be continuing to learn how to play boomwhackers.

This Week’s Learning – wb 09.01.23

In science, we investigated how materials can be shaped by bending, twisting, stretching and squashing. We also learnt about which materials would be suitable for a car and bike using our knowledge of their properties (whether they are tough, smooth, transparent etc.). In English, we have been looking at poems. We looked at the kinds of things poems have in them and had a go at performing some in groups. We have also been writing our own poems in the style of Michael Rosen’s ‘A Woolly Saucepan’. There has definitely been some material madness going on! We then edited and performed our poems.

In maths, we have been identifying equal and unequal groups and making groups ourselves. We have started our learning on multiplication by solving problems using grouping.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 16.01.23

In history, we will be learning about how different types of transport have changed over time and will look more closely at how cars have evolved. In English, we will be pretending we have flown on a magic car to a new mystery place and will be writing setting descriptions for this land.

In maths, we will be continuing our work on multiplication through number lines and arrays.

In music, we are going to be representing music as pictures and then moving on to how to play boomwhackers!

This Week’s Learning – wb 02.01.23

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely Christmas break.

We started our new topic this week: ‘The Wheels on the…’. We will be learning about significant individuals such as Amy Johnson and George Stephenson and discussing different materials and their suitability for different objects. We started by discussing what we already know about these things and what we want to learn. In science, we learnt about materials and their properties. We went on a material hunt around school and then sorted objects based on their properties, e.g. if they were transparent, opaque, hard, bendy etc. You can see pictures in the gallery section. We also discussed which materials are suitable for different objects and why based on these properties and the purpose of the object.

In maths, we have been learning how to find the difference between two sets of objects and two amounts using subtraction: subtracting the smaller number away from the bigger one. You can see pictures in the gallery section.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 09.01.23

In science, we will be learning about how materials can be shaped through an investigation. We will also be discussing suitable materials for cars and bikes. In English, we will be writing poems and performing them to the class.

In maths, we are beginning our learning on multiplication. Children will be making equal and unequal groups to introduce them to this idea before we learn how to multiply numbers using grouping.

In music, we will be representing music as pictures and then moving on to how to play boomwhackers!

This Week’s Learning – wb 12.12.22

In English, we wrote a thank you letter to Grace Darling pretending to be one of the people she saved from the shipwreck in the storm and edited these with our partners. We also discussed everything we had learnt in our topic this term. In D&T, we learnt about what a lighthouse needs and designed our own using this criteria. We then used a range of junk modelling to make them – they turned out great! You can see pictures of these in the gallery section.

It has then been a time of Christmas activities! We had our Christmas concerts and sung beautifully! We also had our class Christmas parties which included lots of games of ‘musical bumps’, ‘musical statues’ and ‘Chinese whispers’! We also had our party snacks. We have also been making Christmas cards and doing other Christmas crafts. You can see some pictures of these things in the gallery section.

First Week Back’s Learning – wb 02.01.23

Our topic next term will be ‘The Wheels on the…’ which will involve learning about how transport has changed over time. We will be learning about significant individuals such as Amy Johnson and George Stephenson and discussing different materials and their suitability for different objects. During the first week, we will be discussing what we already know and what we want to know. We are also going to recap the properties of materials from our learning in Year 1 and learn about the suitability of materials for objects such as cars and bikes. We are then going to be doing an investigation to see how materials can be shaped.

In maths, we will be learning how to find the difference between two amounts.

This Week’s Learning – wb 21.11.22

We had our school trip to the Museum of London this week and had the best time! Have a look for photos in the gallery section.

In history, we used sources to discuss how we know about the fire of London and discussed how reliable these sources were in telling us information about this event. Children ordered them from most to least trustworthy and gave reasons for their choices. We also learnt about how London was rebuilt after the fire. In English, we wrote fact files about what we have learnt about the Great Fire of London. We also did some art this week – we practised different techniques using chalk, including drawing, blending and texture and then created a skyline of the fire using black card for silhouettes of the houses. You can see pictures of our finished art in the gallery section.

In maths, we have been adding two 2-digit numbers using partitioning – adding the tens and adding the ones. We also begun to subtract 2-digit numbers using dienes to help our understanding. You can see pictures in the gallery section.

In music, we continued learning songs for our Christmas concert Performance which will be on Wednesday 14th December at 9am and Thursday 15th December at 2:15pm.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 28.11.22

In history, we will be learning about what Samuel Pepys role in the Great Fire was, using what we learnt on our school trip. In English, we will be planning and writing diaries pretending we are Samuel Pepys.

This Week’s Learning – wb 18.11.22

In geography, we identified human and physical features found in London and located London on a map using an atlas. We then compared Edinburgh and London. In history, we have been learning how London has changed over time, including in the jobs people had and what houses were like. Children then learnt about how fires were dealt with in 1666 and compared this to how we fight fires today. We looked at equipment they used in 1666, including leather buckets, fire hooks and squirters. Children were so excited to start learning about the Great Fire of London! We sorted facts into cause and effect and ordered the main events of the fire on a timeline. We then learnt about how the fire started, why it spread, how they tried to deal with the fire and why it finally stopped. You can see pictures of this work in the gallery section.

In maths, we have been continuing to add and subtract numbers with no regrouping. We then started to add two 2-digit numbers together by partitioning into tens and ones. There are pictures of us doing this using dienes in the gallery section.

In music, we continued learning songs for our Christmas concert Performance which will be on Wednesday 14th December at 9am and Thursday 15th December at 2:15pm.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 21.11.22

This Week’s Learning – wb 07.11.22

In English, we have been reading the story ‘Katie in Scotland’ by James Mayhew. We discussed what happened and how the characters may have felt at different points and then used this in some role play, acting out the story and doing some hot seating. You can see pictures of this in the gallery section. We planned our retells of this story and then collected vocabulary to describe our characters and settings. We then wrote our stories and children were given targets of capital letters and full stops and using expanded noun phrases o describe (a lovely old lady). On Friday, we worked in partners to edit and improve our work.

In maths, we have been finding one more and one less than a number and ten more and ten less than any number. We then built upon this to add and subtract any multiple of 10 (e.g. 20, 30 or 40) to a given number, using dienes and 100 squares to help us at first. You can see a few pictures of this work in the gallery section. On Friday, we learnt how to use our number bonds to 10 to solve bonds to 100, discussing the relationship we could see.

In music, we have started learning songs for our Christmas concert Performance which will be on Wednesday 14th December at 9am or Thursday 15th December at 2:15pm.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 14.11.22

This Week’s Learning – wb 17.10.22

In topic this week, we had an art focus. We looked at the work of artist Carl Warner and created posters of his work. 3Discovery visited us in school and completed a workshop using PicCollage, where we created our posters on the iPads – you can see these in the gallery section. We collected pictures from magazines to create our own artwork in the style of Carl Warner and then made a collage using these. You can see the end result in the gallery section – they turned out brilliantly! We also learnt about the impact of exercise on our bodies in science, completing some exercises to help see what happened to our heart rate. We rounded up the term by discussing everything we have learnt and talking about what our favourite parts have been.

In maths, we have been using our number bonds and the bridging method to subtract numbers. We also begun to compare balanced and unbalanced equations using greater than, less than and equal to. We started doing this practically using scales and Numicon – you can see pictures in the gallery section. After we compared equations in our books, e.g. 8 > 4+3.

In music, we continued learning songs for our Harvest performance, which we eventually performed AMAZINGLY!

First Week Back’s Learning – wb 31.10.22

Our topic when we return is ‘What’s in my Suitcase?’ and we will be learning about the counties and seas of the United Kingdom, along with major physical and human features of the capital cities of these countries. We will be learning about the life of Grace Darling and the events of the Great Fire of London – we also have an exciting school trip planned! During the first week back, we will be locating the countries of the United Kingdom and having a closer look at Edinburgh.

In maths, we will continue to compare balanced and unbalanced equations using greater than, less than and equal to. We will also be learning how to add missing numbers into an equation.

In music next term, our focus will be singing as we learn and rehearse our concert songs. The children will become more confident and independent singers, internalising and reproducing melodies with less support. They will also pair some of their songs with actions in the form of BSL. In our warm-ups, we will continue to practise finding and keeping the beat, accurately repeating rhythms and matching pitch with our voices as well as learning about how to look after our voices.

This Week’s Learning – wb 10.10.22

In English this week, learnt about what makes a good non-chronological (information) report and everything we need to include in one, including titles, subheadings, true information and pictures. We planned our reports using our research from last week about what our chosen animal needs to survive and then wrote our reports, focussing on what food they eat, how we can care for them and what types of shelter and exercise they need. We then had our first editing lesson and learnt how we can work with a partner to edit our mistakes in writing and up-level our work to make it more effective.

In maths, we have continued to use bridging and number bonds to 10 to solve equations up to 100. We also started to use bridging to subtract numbers, first practically using ten frames and then in our books. You can see some pictures of us working practically in the gallery section.

In music, we continued learning songs for our Harvest performance.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 17.10.22

In topic next week, we have an art focus. We will be learning about the work of Carl Warner and the style of art he creates. We will then be gathering images to create our own foodscape in his style before practising how to collage using these materials. We will then get busy making our foodscape! In science, we are learning about the impact of exercise on the body and carrying out an investigation to test how our pulse and heart rate changes after exercise. Finally, we will be discussing everything we have learnt this topic.

In maths, we will be continuing to use our number bonds to subtract using the bridging to the nearest 10 method.

In music, we will have our final practise for our harvest performance!

This Week’s Learning – wb 03.10.22

In English this week, we have written instructions on how to make a salad after making them ourselves last week. We started by looking at examples of instructions and discussing what features they had: adverbs, imperative (bossy) verbs and adverbs. Children then planned and wrote their instructions in their books. We are so proud of the end writing result! You can see some of the finished writing in the gallery section. In science, we recapped our learning about what animals need to survive and picked an animal to research to find out what care it needs.

In maths, we have started our learning about addition and have been recapping our number bonds to 10 and 20. For the rest of the week, we learnt how to use the ‘bridging the ten’ technique: using our number bonds to 10 to add two 1-igit numbers together, e.g. 7 + 8 is the same as 10 + 5 = 15.

In music, we continued learning songs for our Harvest performance.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 10.10.22

In English next week, we are learning about what makes a good non-chronological report and will then write our own based on how to look after a pet of our choice.

In maths, we will be continuing to use our number bonds to add numbers up to 100 and will start our learning on subtraction using these facts.

In music, we will continue to learn our songs for our harvest performance.

This Week’s Learning – wb 26.09.22

In art, we designed a healthy eating plate, choosing a few foods from different food groups to sketch. We then used tissue paper to change our design into a 3D image. You can see some of these in the gallery section. In D&T, we have been making salads. We started by tasting different salad ingredients and discussing what we liked and disliked about them. Using this, we then planned our salads and practised our chopping skills using the bridge and claw technique. On Thursday, the time came to make our salads! Have a look in the gallery section to see how they turned out. We then evaluated them, thinking about what we liked and what we would improve if we made them again.

In maths, we have been learning about odd and even numbers, using pictures to help us notice the pairs (multiples of 2). We then investigated what happens when we:

  • Add two odd numbers together
  • Add two even numbers together
  • Add one even and one odd number together

In music, we continued learning songs for our Harvest performance – we are sounding great!

Next Week’s Learning – wb 03.10.22

In English next week, we will be writing instructions on how to make a salad, using when we made them to help us. We will also be choosing different animals to research, focussing on how and what these animals need to survive.

In maths, we will be recapping our number bonds to 10 and 20 and then starting our learning on addition using bridging.

In music, we will continue to learn our songs for our harvest performance.

This Week’s Learning – wb 19.09.22

In topic, and science in particular, we learnt about the lifecycle of a human and then challenged ourselves by comparing this to the lifecycles of butterflies and caterpillars. We wrote about the key changes at each stage and compared what we can do at each stage, e.g. a baby can’t read or write but a child can. We have been learning about the importance of keeping healthy, including foods we should be eating and how to have good hygiene. Children took part in an experiment to test how best to clean germs (glitter) off our hands. We tested a paper towel, water or water and soap to see which was the best at removing the glitter. You can see pictures of this work in the gallery section. Our caterpillars have also turned into butterflies! We were sad to let them go today but it was great to see them grow and fly away!

In maths, we have been doing a few little quizzes so we can see what we are understanding well and what we need some more support with – we have finished them all now! We also continued our learning on comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal to (<, >, =).

We did not have music this week as it was a bank holiday but look forward to learning some of the songs for our Harvest performance!

Next Week’s Learning – wb 26.09.22

In topic next week, we will be having an art and D&T focus. In art, we will be recreating a 2D image of healthy foods as a 3D piece of art using tissue paper. We will then be doing something very exciting – making our own salads!

In maths, we will be ordering numbers from 1 – 100 which sums up our work on place value. We are then moving on to addition and subtraction, starting with identifying odd and even numbers.

In music, we will start to learn our songs for our harvest performance.

This Week’s Learning – wb 12.09.22

In English, we used our plans to help us collect adjectives to describe the characters in our story ‘The Tadpole’s Promise’. We then used this piece of work, along with our plans, to write our retell. In science, we learnt about the lifecycle of a butterfly and ordered pictures, writing what happens at each stage from egg to butterfly.

In maths, we continued our learning on place value. We partitioned (split up) 2-digit numbers in different way using our knowledge of tens and ones. On Friday, we begun to compare numbers using greater than, less than and equal to (<, > and =). We did this practically this week and will move to comparing in digit form next week. You can see pictures of this activity in the gallery section.

In music, we learnt about beats and rhythms through singing and playing untuned percussion instruments.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 19.09.22

In science next week, we will be learning about the human life cycle and comparing what humans can do at each stage. We will discuss what animals, including humans, need to survive and the importance of healthy eating and hygiene.

In maths, we will be comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal to. We will also be doing some mini quizzes to see what we can remember from Year 1 – but no need to worry about them, they are very short!

In music, we will start to learn our songs for our harvest performance.

Year 2 have been fantastic this week! We have loved having them back in school and look forward to watching all their progress over the year.

This Week’s Learning – wb 05.09.22

We have started our first topic, ‘Growing Up’. In science, we learnt about animals and their young and the life cycle of a frog where children had to order and explain the four stages. In English, we are going to be retelling the story ‘The Tadpole’s Promise’ so, to help us understand the structure of the story, spent some time reading the book and acting it out, thinking about how characters felt at different points. You can see some pictures of this in the gallery section. We also planned our story, ready to write a retell next week.

In maths, we started by recapping what we have learnt previously about place value, identifying the tens and ones in a 2-digit number. We showed our understanding using dienes (photos can be seen in the gallery section) and also partitioned numbers in different ways.

We also had our first music lesson this week where we used a range of instruments to keep to the rhythm of music.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 12.09.22

In topic next week, and English in particular, we will be collecting adjectives to use in our stories to describe the tadpole and the caterpillar, our two characters in the book. We will then use this vocabulary and our plans to help us retell the story of ‘The Tadpole’s Promise’. In science, we will be learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly.

In maths, we are continuing to learn about place value and will be partitioning numbers into tens and ones in different ways and using different resources. We are also going to compare numbers to 100 using <, > and =.

In music, we will be learning about beats and rhythms through singing and playing untuned percussion instruments. We will build on the work children did in Year 1 on hearing and keeping the beat then we will start to look at graphic scores and how they can tell us what to play, leading up to making their own graphic score for a rhythm they compose.
