This Week's Learning w/e 07.07.23 :

Maths:

This week in maths we looked at the area of composite rectilinear shapes. Then, we started to learn about volume by making 3d shapes using cubes. After this, we learned how to calculate volume by looking at shapes made out of cubes and counting the cubes. Next, we learned how to calculate volume using the method base multiplied by height multiplied by the length. Lastly, we looked at recognising 3D shapes from 2D representations.

English:

This week in English, we began by editing our explanation texts. Then, we started working on our knowledge of the book ‘Jaz Santos vs The World’. We looked at hobbies we enjoy and thought about what things may stop us from taking part in a particular hobby. Next, we looked at the features of a narrative. After this, we learned how to use inverted commas and other punctuation to accurately punctuate speech. Lastly, we wrote a character description of the main character for the narrative we are going to write.

Topic:

In science this week, we looked at comparing the life cycles of mammals. We discussed the three different types of mammals; placentals, monotremes and marsupials. Then, we compared the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds.

For art this week, we finished our portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo. We drew the second half of our portrait, focusing on creating facial features using items that represent our personalities.

Next Week’s Learning w/b 10.07.2023 :

Maths:

Next week, we will start by looking at vertical lines of symmetry. Then, we will look at using horizontal lines of symmetry to draw shapes. After this, we will learn how to translate shapes using instructions. Next, we will learn how to plot shapes using coordinates. Lastly, we will be translating 2D shapes using coordinates to find out the final position of the shapes.

English:

Next week in English, we will be starting by planning our narratives, based on the story ‘Jaz Santos vs the world’. Next, we will be gathering vocabulary we can use in our work. We will think about speech, figurative language and adverbs to describe the movements of our character. The rest of the week will be spent writing our narratives.

Topic:

In science next week, we will be comparing the gestation periods of different animals. We will create graphs that compare these. We will then be thinking about how puberty changes a person’s body. We will think about the differences between a boy and a girl. There will be lots of opportunities to think about how we can be less worried about these changes.

This Week's Learning w/e 30.06.23 :

Maths:

This week in maths we learned how to find the perimeter of a compound shape. We thought about how we could calculate missing sides to ensure that our perimeter was accurate. We discussed how the perimeter is always the length of the outside of the shape. Then, we moved onto discussing area. We looked at finding the area of rectangles by multiplying the length by the width. We thought about the difference between area and perimeter, thinking about the perimeter being the fence around our garden and the area being the grass inside our garden. Next, we looked at finding the area of compound shapes. We used a method to split our shapes into multiple rectangles and find the area of each by multiplying the width by the length. Then we added the two areas together to find the total area of the compound shape.

English:

This week in English, we began by gathering vocabulary for our explanation texts. We thought about how we could use different types of words in sentences to describe and explain the human life cycle. After this, we wrote our explanation texts. We thought carefully about our language choices to ensure we met the purpose of informing the reader. We were able to use causal conjunctions and technical vocabulary to ensure the reader had a clear understanding of our human life cycles.

Topic:

In science this week, we looked at asexual reproduction in plants. We discussed how some plants, like strawberry plants, are able to reproduce without the need to be pollinated by another plant. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction in plants, thinking about what would happen if a plant got a disease or if they were isolated. Then, we looked at the similarities and differences between the life cycles of different amphibians. We created a Venn diagram to think about the comparisons between the life cycles of frogs, salamanders and axolotls.

For art this week, we started to draw our portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo. We drew the first half of our portrait, focusing on creating realistic facial features to make our portrait look like us.

Next Week’s Learning w/b 03.07.2023 :

Maths:

Next week, we will start by continuing to find the area of composite rectilinear shapes. However, during this lesson, we will have to calculate the dimensions of some missing sides. Then, we will be moving on to understand volume by building various 3D shapes. After this, we will consolidate our understanding of volume. Next, we will learn how to calculate the volume of cubes and cuboids. Lastly, we will learn how to recognised cubes and cuboids from 2D representations.

English:

Next week in English, we will be starting a new piece of writing. We will begin by understanding more about our class novel ‘Jaz Santos vs the World’ we will think about hobbies that people may do and what may hinder them from being able to take part. Next, we will look at the features of a narrative. After this, we will consolidate our knowledge of using direct speech. We will focus on the punctuation that needs to be included when writing direct speech. Then, we will write a character description of the main characters for our narratives. We will use figurative language to describe their physical features and personality. Lastly, we will use our ideas to create a plan for our own stories, all about someone trying to find their favourite hobby.

Topic:

In science next week, we will be comparing the life cycles of different mammals. We will think about how different mammals reproduce and grow. Then, we will be comparing the life cycles of mammals. Birds, amphibians and fish.

For art next week, we will be finishing our self-portrait in the style of Frida Kahlo. This week, we will think about creating our other half of our picture that focuses on showing our personalities. We will include different objects to create our facial features. For example, we may have some pencil noses, music note ears and football eyes.

Maths:

This week in maths we learned about the different types of triangles. We thought about how to classify them and what makes them different. Then, we learned about the differences between regular and irregular polygons. We thought about what makes a polygon first and then how to classify between regular and irregular. Next, we learned how to measure sides and angles of 2D shapes. We then used this knowledge to draw 2D shapes. Lastly, we learned how to calculate missing angles in a triangle.

English:

This week in English, we started a new piece of writing. We began by looking at the life cycle of a human and thinking about the different stages of a human life cycle. After this, we analysed the features of an explanation text. Next, we thought about how we could use causal conjunctions and adverbials to explain a process. Also, we looked at how we can use present tense and second person to explain our ideas. Lastly, we planned our explanations texts about the human life cycle.

Topic:

In science this week, we looked at how flowering plants reproduce. We thought about the different ways pollen can be carried from one plant to another and how vital the bees are to continuing the life cycle of plants.

For art this week, we developed our ideas for our self portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo. The children enjoyed thinking of different object that represent them which can be used in place of facial features.

This week we have also thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Sky Arts Week. Children in Year 5 enjoyed having the opportunity to enjoys sounds and creating their own sounds using just their bodies. All of the children also enjoyed our arts week project. They loved learning to draw in the style of the Tom Gates book and using music as a stimulus for their ideas. They had to imagine what Tom was doing based on the music. Then, they used a famous painting or piece of artwork and reimagined it. It was lovely to see how creative they work at thinking outside of the box to make their style unique.

This Week's Learning w/e 19.05.23 :

Maths:

This week in maths we began by continuing to read and interpret line graphs using our previous knowledge. We then spent a few days consolidating this knowledge by solving word problems using line graphs. We thought about multi-step problems and how we can interpret the data to support our answers. Then, we moved onto looking at angles. We started off by measuring angles using a protractor. We started by understanding what acute and obtuse angles are and measuring these. Then, we spent time learning how to accurately draw acute and obtuse angles.

English:

This week in English, we started the week by watching a video called ‘The Piano’ which is our stimulus for writing. We discussed what was happening in the video and thought about how the characters are feeling at different points in the video. We then looked at the features of a flashback story and began to understand what we would need to include to ensure that we are entertaining the reading and supporting them to understand what was happening in the story. After that, we thought more about emotive language and the strategies we could use to ensure our reader will feel they are part of the story. Next, we learned to use dashes to indicate parenthesis. We thought about how we can use a dash to add extra information or add drama to our writing. Lastly, we started to plan our flashback stories, thinking about the different parts of the story and how we will tell the reader all about the man’s life.

Topic:

This week in history, we looked at comparing the lives of rich and poor Tudors. We used sources to help us understand the inventory of a rich or poor Tudor and how these differed from one another. We also thought about how the quality of life would be different for both groups.

In geography, we learned how to use a 4-figure grid reference to identify where something is on a map. We used map symbols to help us identify key locations and think about how we could help someone navigate to a specific landmark using an OS map.

In art this week, we learned how to draw facial features for our portraits. We looked at techniques to draw eyes, noses, mouths, and ears. We also talked about how we can use shading and texture to make our portrait look more realistic. We used our coloured pencils to show different patterns.

Next Week’s Learning w/b 22.05.2023 :

Maths:

Next week, we will be continuing our shape topic by looking at reflex angles. We will understand what a reflex angle is and measuring these. Then, we will transfer this skill to help us draw reflex angles. After this, we will look at angles around a point. We will learn how to calculate missing angles around a point and how our knowledge of circles can help us with this. Lastly, we will continue with this to solve problems where we need to calculate missing angles around a point in word problems.

English:

Next week in English, we will begin the week by gathering language that we can use in our flashback story. We will think about verbs and adverbs to describe the movement of the people in the video. We will also think about emotive language to help paint a picture of our story in the readers mind and to ensure they thoroughly understand how his emotions change. Then, we will spend the next few days carefully writing our flashback story. The children will have plenty of time to consolidate their ideas and to think about how they convey the story to entertain and entice the reader. Lastly, we will spend some time editing and improving to ensure we have included the features.

Topic:

In geography next week, we will be drawing our own maps of the local area. We will use map symbols, OS maps and online maps to help us identify specific landmarks and road networks around us.

For art this week, we will be drawing our Tudor portraits in the style of Hans Holbein. The children will have time to think about their ideas and to perfect their artwork – all of us are artists.

Maths:

This week in maths we began by continuing to look at interpreting timetables and understanding the information within them. We calculated journey times and the best journeys for people to take. Then, we started looking at pictograms. We talked about how we could interpret them and the facts we needed to help us when using a pictogram. We then applied this knowledge to a series of word problems about a range of different pictograms.

English:

This week in English, we started the week understanding the reasons why Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon and the things that were preventing him from doing so. We thought about why Anne Boleyn was more favourable and why the church was opposed to the initial marriage to Catherine and then their divorce. Then, we analysed the features of a persuasive letter, including the structure and grammar. After this, we learned how to use more powerful adjectives to describe. Also, we learned more about superlatives and how these can make our writing more persuasive. We used both of these grammar features to write a short character description of Anne Boleyn from the perspective of Henry VIII.
