Knowledge Organisers

Knowledge Organisers have been devised as a multi-purpose tool to assist teachers in their planning and assessments, Subject Leaders in their evaluations of standards in their subjects and parents to have a fuller understanding of knowledge their child will cover each term and how they can support them to remember this.

At Rushy Meadow, we emphasise the importance of children needing to regularly revisit their prior knowledge to make links in their learning and to help them not to forget.   This is referred to as ‘sticky knowledge’ which is important in two ways:

1. Firstly, the more a child knows, the more their knowledge can stick to their existing knowledge (building schemas).

2. Secondly, we want their knowledge to stick!  To ensure that this is the case, children must keep retrieving existing knowledge from their long-term memories in order to interrupt forgetting.

Therefore, the children will use the knowledge organisers in class to help them remember key facts. We encourage parents to spend some time looking at them with their child(ren) at home too.

In Early Years, children are introduced to knowledge organisers for the first time. This helps to prepare them for using knowledge organisers in their next stage of learning.
