Our topic this term is ‘Animals That Come from an Egg’’

This week, we continued looking into dinosaurs as we learnt that dinosaurs come from an egg.  We looked at different types of dinosaurs and labelled the parts of a dinosaur.  We read the stories around ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’ and we talked about our favourite parts of the stories.

In Maths this week, the children in Reception started to look at taking away from 10 and from 20!  We used numberlines to help us to count backwards.  We also began to record a take away calculation.

In Nursery, the children looked at the language of mass – heavier, heaviest, lightest etc.  We use balance scales to show which object was lightest or heaviest.

Clothing

The weather seems to be a bit varied this week coming!  In Early Years, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!  This means that we will go out in most weather (except extreme weather!)  with that in mind, please can we ask that children have a warm coat and a change of clothing in their bags.

Have a lovely weekend everyone, but wrap up warm if going outside!

This Week’s Learning – 21.2.2022

Our topic this term is ‘Animals That Come from an Egg’’

It was the start of our new topic this week and we found a mysterious egg in the school gardens!  This prompted lots of talk about what could be inside the egg – our suggestions included chickens, snakes, dinosaurs and even dragons!  Then our Premises Manager – Mr Lock – sent us a CCTV of a dinosaur walking around the school gardens, could it be looking for the egg?  On Thursday, we had a visit from a dinosaur and she took back her egg – she was a very kind dinosaur!

We’ll pop the videos and photographs on the Gallery pages – we showed the video to Reception only as we didn’t want the Nursery children to get upset!  But please feel free to show any of the children, it’s ok to talk about how it ‘was just pretend’ – as much as we love to get their imaginations going, we also need to let them know that there are no dinosaurs roaming around anymore!

In our writing area, we wrote about what we thought might be in the egg – we were very impressed with the children’s knowledge about animals that come from an egg, a huge thank you to everyone who completed the half term learning task!

In Maths this week, the children in Reception started to look at taking away one from numbers to 10 (and some children were taking away one from numbers to 20).  We sang ’10 green bottles’ a lot this week!  We also started recording our number sentences eg; 8 – 1 = 7.  The children are getting very good at reading and recording a number sentence.  At home, you can do lots of reinforcing of this during play, cooking and shopping; for example, “You have 5 books on this shelf, if I take away 1 book, how many will you have now?” This will be good for Nursery children too!

In Nursery, the children were subitising up to 3.  Subitising is a fantastic skill that both Nursery and Reception need and it is something that comes with lots and lots of practice.  It basically means that children know how many objects there are without needing to count them.  As the children get into Reception, a key subitising question is usually “how many can you see and how do you see them?”  On Friday, one of the amazing Reception children had to count how many skittles we had left after our bowling game and he said ‘I can see 4, I can see 2 twos” – this was fantastic!  We will send more information out about subitising and how we teach it in Early Years!

Next Term’s Learning – wc 28.2.2022

Next week, we are going to be looking at the ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’ books.  These books are so popular with the children so we are really looking forward to exploring the stories with the children!

In Maths next week, Reception are going to develop their subtraction by learning more about taking away more than 1.  We will be looking at how to use a 10 frame to show take away.  You can reinforce this at home by talking about take away in daily activities, eg: “I have 4 eggs in the box but I am going to take away 2 to make an omelette, how many eggs will I have in the box?”

Nursery will be looking at comparing heavy and light objects, they will be holding different objects and feeling which feels heavy and which feels light.  They will also be using the words ‘heaviest and lightest’

The Big Walk and Wheel, formally the Big Pedal is back the week of 21st of March to the 1st of April. Please do try to use a sustainable form of transport to come to school during this week, you could walk, cycle, scoot, roller skate etc. there is even a chance to win some great prizes. Last year our school came 13th out of 5000 schools, I would love it if we could do even better this year.

Kind regards Mrs Green, School Travel Champion.

Thursday 3rd March is World Book Day, we are inviting all children (and staff!) to dress up as a book character!  In Early Years, we will be exploring the stories ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’ – we will be comparing and exploring this series of books.

Changes to PE Day

We are making a slight change to our PE Days, but this will only affect the Nursery children.  Sparrow Reception Class PE day will still be a Wednesday, Wren Reception Class PE day will still be a Friday, but Nursery children will now do a PE session on a Wednesday and a Friday.  Nursery children do not need to come in PE clothes on these days, but as always, children should be wearing clothing and shoes that they can safely run around and climb in!

Changing Books

Nursery children will continue to change their story book on a Monday and we will keep the story book trolley outside every morning so both Nursery and Reception children can change these as often as they would like.  These are books to enjoy with a grown up, we are not expecting children to be reading these on their own – yet!

Reception children will now be changing their home reading books on a Friday.  Reception children will come home with at least 2 reading books – the RWI Sound Blending Book or RWI Ditty book is the levelled book that is linked to the sounds they are learning in their phonics sessions and the other book is one that will help their to practice and apply all of their sounds!  Please can we remind you that children should be reading with you every day at home as this will enable them to continue to make the fantastic progress we have seen from so many of the children.

Reception children will continue to take home a new phonics sheet every Monday that is linked to their learning in their phonics sheet.  Please can we remind you to ensure that these sheets are completed and discuss at home, reading to hand in every Monday.  This will really support the children with the progress they are making in phonics.

We are so impressed with how motivated and engaged the children have been this week – they have come back from half term looking so grown up!

Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy the sunshine!

This Week’s Learning – 7.2.2022

Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’’

This week we enjoyed our new story ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’ – we loved Zog last week and it was great to see what happened to the characters after the story of Zog had ended!  We loved our new Doctor role play area too – please see the Gallery for pictures of the doctors!

We talked about what we wanted to be when we grow up – a lot of us wanted to be doctors and nurses!  Some of us wrote down what we wanted to be too.

In Maths this week, the children in Reception started to look at numbers above 10 – we used Dienes apparatus to show this, for example, 13 is one 10 and three 1s.  We took a 10 row and then 3 ones to show 13.  There is a great wiki page about Dienes if you have not come across them before – the children will using Dienes and Place Value counters from Reception up to Year 6!  What are Dienes? - Answered - Twinkl Teaching Wiki

Next Term’s Learning – wc 21.2.2022

Our New Topic is ‘What Comes from an Egg?’

For the first week of the Spring 2 term, we will be looking at what animals come from an egg.  We will be talking about how animals look after their eggs and what care and attention we give to animals to help them thrive.

We will also be looking at healthy teeth next week.  We will look at who we need to brush our teeth and also how we do good tooth brushing.

In Maths next week, Reception are going to start looking at subtraction.  To start with we will look at 1 less than numbers up to 20, then we will start linking 1 less as ‘take away 1’ before eventually moving on to taking away more than 1.

Nursery will be looking at subitising up to 3.  Subitising is a key skill that Nursery and Reception use and develop – it will be used throughout their school life and beyond!  It basically means that we can look at a group of objects and immediately know how many that is without counting.  Our first experiences of subitising are probably playing board games with a dice – we no longer have to count how many spots of the side, we just know what number we have rolled.

Class Teacher Awards – 11.2.2022

Our Stars of the Week this week are…

Have a wonderful half term!  We look forward to hearing all about your adventures when you return!

This Week’s Learning – 28.1.2022

Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’’

This week we enjoyed our new story ‘Zog’ – it linked wonderfully to Chinese New Year on Tuesday and we made dragon masks, painting dragons and explored noodles in the fine motor tray!

We ordered pictures of the story and some of us wrote about what Zog did in each school year.

In Maths this week, the children in Reception looked doubling numbers – we used a ten frame and a part, part, whole model to show what we had learnt.  In Nursery, we continued to look at counting how many in a group and remembering that the last number we counted show how many in total in the group.

Next Term’s Learning – wc 7.2.2022

Next week, we will be introducing the book ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’.  We will use this book to talk about how Princess Pearl helped all of the people and animals in the story and relate this to our own experiences of doctors, nurses and vets.

In Maths next week, Reception are going to be looking at numbers above ten – understanding that teen numbers are made up from 1 block of 10 and one: so 13 is 1 ten and 3 ones.

Nursery will be looking at shapes and will focus on squares next week.

This is the last week of Spring 1 and half term will start on Monday 14th February

Mufti Day – Friday 11th February

For well being week, we have a whole school mufti day titled ‘express yourself’ – children can come in clothing that expresses their personality!

Spare Clothes

Please can we politely ask, that if we have lent you any spare Reception or Nursery clothing that you return it to us asap.

Please can we ask you to ensure that you provide spare clothing for your children – we try to ensure that they keep as clean as possible and use the resources carefully, but paint, water and even mud will always be a hazard we can’t control and we will have to change children in to clean, warm clothes as needed!

On that note, if you have any leggings, joggers or socks that your child has now grown out of, we would very much appreciate a donation to our spare clothes trolley.  Thank you.

As always, if you have any questions please email us on:

Have a wonderful weekend, the sun is due to make an appearance but so is an arctic blast!

This Week’s Learning – 24.1.2022

Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’’

This week we continued with our story ‘Superworm’ – we can now all join in with the repeated parts and we ask for this story every story time too!  It is very popular!

Superworm visited different locations to help other creatures and we talked about the weather and climate at these locations.  We then matched clothing to types of weather and did some independent writing about what we would wear!

In Maths this week, the children in Reception looked at adding two groups together using  a tens frame.  To use a tens frame, we had to remember the correct order to put the counters in.  We have to start from the left and at the top, once the top is full then we start at the bottom from the left.  We’ve included some tens frame activities on the home learning section – both Reception and Nursery can use a tens frame.

Next Term’s Learning – wc 31.1.2022

Next week, we will be introducing the book ‘Zog’.  We will look at dragons to start with as Tuesday 1st February is Chinese New Year – it is the year of the dragon!

In Maths next week, Reception are going to be looking at what it means to double a number.  Then linking this to adding 2 groups together that are the same.

Nursery will be looking at finding the total of a group of objects – meaning the last number that we count tells us how many there are altogether.

This Week’s Learning – 17.1.2022

Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’’

This week we introduced the story ‘Superworm’ – the children really enjoyed this story and liked all the special things that Superworm did for his friends!   We really enjoyed making our own Superworms with pipe cleaners and cheerios, hopefully these all made them home in one piece!  In The Nest, we had a tuff tray full of soil and wiggly worms – they were pretend worms but were very realistic!

In Maths this week, the children in Reception looked at adding two groups together using the part part whole method. You can pop over to home learning to have a look at what this is and how you could use it at home.  We used the part part whole method to start to write our own number sentences – and we are getting very good at this now!

Our Nursery friends have been looking at special language and describing where something is.  We hid the penguin and the children had to describe where it was – they are getting very good at this!

Next Term’s Learning – wc 24.1.2022

Next week, we will continue our story of ‘Superworm’ and take a look at where Superworm has been and where it might like to go.  We will look at who he can rescue in different locations and what the weather is like there!

In Maths next week, Reception are going to be using a 10 frame to support their counting.  We are going to look at adding 2 groups together using the 10 frame.

Please can we remind you that children should not be wearing jewellery to school.  Small stud earrings (no hoops) can be worn, but MUST to taken out on PE days.

This Week’s Learning – 10.1.2022

Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’’

This week we continued with the story of ‘Supertato.’  The children in Reception have been writing sentences about what Evil Pea and Supertato did in the stories.  We have also started to act out being a superhero in the role play area – we have been writing superhero messages and using gadgets to rescue the veggies in distress!

In Maths this week, the children in Reception looked at adding two groups together.  We used the rescued veggies and made number sentences; 3 carrots add 4 onions equals 7 veggies.  You can continue this at home too with their toys or food when you go shopping eg: “I need 2 oranges and 5 bananas, how many fruits will that equal altogether?” The key vocabulary is ‘add’ and ‘equal’ this week.

Our Nursery friends have been counting up to 5 rescued veggies and they have also been singing lots of number songs to help.  Singing songs is a fantastic way to understand the order of numbers especially if it is a counting up song – so the songs ‘1 elephant went out to play…’ and ‘1 potato, 2 potatoes, 3 potatoes, 4…’ are both super songs to sing!

Next Week’s Learning – wc 17.1.2022

Next week, we will be using the book ‘Superworm’ to base our writing on.  Superworm is a very flexible superhero and helps out in many different ways!  We will be ordering the story and the Reception children will start to draw story maps to show what happens next.

In Maths next week, Reception are going to look at add by counting on.  So for example, if we have 4 bananas and 3 satsumas, we don’t need to count the 4 bananas indivudially and then keep counting one the 3 satsumas.  Instead we touch the whole group of banans and say ‘4’ then count on by touching each satsuma, saying ‘5, 6, 7, we have 7 pieces of fruit altogether.  So 4 add 3 equals 7.’

In Nursery, we are going to look at language to describe where something is.  So we will be hinding toys for the children to describe where they found them, for example ‘ the teddy is in the bin, the book is under the table…. The key vocabulary will be in, out, between, besides, on, under

Reading & Story Books

Please ensure that Nursery story books are returned every Monday as they will be changed by Miss Driscoll and Miss Wu each week.  Reception children can change their books when they would like as the trolley will be outside every day before and after school.

Please ensure that Reception Reading Diaries are in school every day and we will change these books every Monday and read with your child at least twice a week.  Please ensure you are recording in the diary when you read with your child every day – the children receive Gold Cards when they read at home.

Please ensure that Reception Phonics Folders are handed in every Monday as we will send home the previous phonics sounds for you to practice at home.  Again, the children will receive Gold Cards for completed these.

Starting from Monday 17th January, we will be asking Nursery to go straight into The Nest in the mornings, some of our new friends have been a bit unsettled and we thought this would help all to ensure they have a calm and peaceful morning!  They will still come into Sparrows and Wrens Classrooms after the register as usual.

PE days are as follows:

Sparrow Reception – Wednesday with Mrs Lambert

Sparrow & Wren Nursery – Thursday with Mrs Turner

Wren Reception – Friday with Mrs Briggs

Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE on the correct day.

This Week’s Learning – 7.1.2022

WELCOME BACK!

Our topic this term is ‘Superheroes’’

This week we introduced the story ‘Supertato.’  We have started to set up a Super Hero Hangout in the classroom and the children have loved dressing up as superheroes!  In the Supertato stories, Supertato has to rescue the veggies from the Evil Pea!  The children loved rescuing our own veggies!

In Maths this week, the children looked at one more and one less up to 5, 10 and even to 20.  We counted peas and veggies in the classroom too!

Next Term’s Learning – wc 10.1.2022

We will be continuing with our fantastic story of Supertato!  We will be looking at what Superheroes do and why and looking at the difference between right and wrong.

In Maths, we will be looking at how to record sets of numbers and some of us will also start to look at addition two sets together and recording the total.

Labels

Please can we remind you to label all coats, hats, scarfs,  gloves (although most gloves are tricky to stick a label to!) and shoes too!  We have a lost property box in the cloakroom with odd gloves!  With the wet weather, we have been encouraging children to wear wellies outside so they can splash in the puddles and the mud!  If your child has wellies, please can you put them in a bag on their bag – ensuring their wellies are named!  Please remember to provide spare clothing as it is wet outside and messy inside!

Reading & Story Books

Starting on Monday 10th, we have made some changes to when we send home books.  This Monday, we will ensure that every child in Nursery and Reception takes home a story book.  There will be a wide range of story books to choose from and the aim of this book is to promote a love of stories!  The book is for an adult or older sibling to read to them and talk about what they have enjoyed.  We would love it if you could upload a photograph to Tapestry and let us know what you both enjoyed in the story and what kind of book you would like to share next (we can then update our story book collection!)

The story book library will then be popped outside every home time from Tuesday – Friday. You can then choose another book as often as you would like!  Just pop your old book back on the trolley and pick a new one with your child!

Every Monday, Nursery will change their books in the classroom – and can then change them with their adults more often if needed.  Reception will be encouraged change the books themselves with their adults.

In Reception, the children will also have a reading book to take home that is linked to the level there are working on in their phonics lesson.  We will be checking reading diaries every Monday, Wednesday and Friday – looking at how they are getting on at home and noting which areas they may need more support in.  We will change their reading books every Monday and aim to read with every child at least twice a week.  When reading with your child at home, the children will have the RWI sounds mat and a Sound Blending Book to read for the week.  We know that some of our lovelies go through books quickly, so we will also be popping in an addition phonics book that has sentences to read for some of the children.  Please feel free to alternative between the sound mat, blending book and sentence book when reading each day – you don’t need to go through all 3 every day!

We popped a memo up on Tapestry with our new PE days – please remember to check your Tapestry account at least weekly.  PE days are as follows:

Sparrow Reception – Wednesday with Mrs Lambert

Sparrow & Wren Nursery – Thursday with Mrs Turner

Wren Reception – Friday with Mrs Briggs

Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE on the correct day.

As always, if you have any questions please email us on:

wrenclass@cirrustrust.onmicrosoft.com

sparrowclass@cirrustrust.onmicrosoft.com

We aim to check our emails before the children arrive and once again after they have left for the day.  If you have any urgent messages, please phone the school office and they will ensure that we receive that message during the day!

Have a wonderful weekend, we will see you all on Monday!

We continued with or story this week of ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.’

This week we retold the story using our story maps and we were all amazing at this!  We used the props in the role play area and book corner to retell the story with our friends too!  Reception children wrote captions for pictures linked to the story – we used our sounds to write words (we were amazing!)

In Maths this week, we looked at numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9!  We talked about how many each number was and looked at 1 more for each too.

This Week’s Learning – 22.11.2021

Our topic this term is ‘Nursery Rhymes & Celebrations’

Our story this week was ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.  We linked lots of our activities to the story.

We read the story each day and then by the end of the week, we created a picture story map to help us to retell the story by ourselves! In our role play area, we had 3 different sized bowls of porridge and we also had 3 different sized chairs!  The children loved acting this out to each other!

In Maths this week, we have been writing numbers sentences!  We looked at a number a day and worked out how many number sentences we could write for each number!  We found this very tricky, but we are all making great progress!

Next Week’s Learning – wc 29.11.2021

We are going to continue with our ‘Goldilocks and the 3 Bears’ story next week too!  We will be looking at making porridge next week and will need to write a shopping list of ingredients!

Marble Jar Rewards:

The children in Sparrows and also in Wrens had filled up their marble jar this week and as a result, both classes completed cooking activities!

We have a reward jar that we can add marbles to each day – for things such as looking after school properties, being kind and caring etc.  The children get to choose the reward they would like – both classes voted for cooking!  Wrens have done another vote and this time have chosen to collect marbles for parachute games!  Sparrows are still deciding!

Gold Cards:

You will have noticed that some of the children have started to bring home their 1st gold card sheet (gold coin) which has been completed!  In each classroom across the whole school, we have a chart of names, every child starts on a green card each morning, then during the day adults can award a gold card (or even 2!)  We will stamp their gold card chart.  The children have 6 gold card charts take could be completed by the end of the school year!  (This is currently for Reception upwards, Nursery children prefer to receive a sticker on their jumpers!)

This Week’s Learning – 11.10.21

We had lots of fun again this week and have especially enjoyed being outside while we still have a little nice weather left!

Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ This week we looked at a book called ‘Fletcher and the Falling Leaves.’  We have talked about the changes to the trees outside and have loved having a special table in each classroom that contains leaves, conkers, pine cones etc.  We really enjoyed adding to these tables with some of the items we found on our Autumn Walks!

In our Maths carpet sessions, we have been looking at numbers 4 and 5.  We looked at ways to show 4 and found 4 objects around the classroom.  We looked at number 5 and also began to look at number sentences to show 2 numbers that make 5.   Some of us have started to record our own number sentences to 5!

The Reception children really seem to be enjoying their phonics sessions!  We looked at t and i this week and talked about all of the words that begin with t and then also words that have an i in the middle – this was harder! Well done to everyone who has been practising writing these letters at home – we topped up the phonics folders on Friday so you should have the next set ready!

  Next week’s Learning –

18.10.21

Next week, we are going to continue to look at ‘Fletcher and the Falling Leaves’.  We are going to create maps of the walks we went on around the school grounds – adding photographs of our walk to the maps!

In Maths, we are going to continue to look at number 5 and the focus will be on counting up to 5 objects.  We will be learning that we need to touch each object and say the number before moving on to the next object – this is called 1:1 correspondence and is a very important skill in counting!

 Stars of the Week!

This week we have chosen…

Sparrow Class – tbc

Wren Class – Aryan and Amber

Well done to you all!

Lots of fun was had again this week!  We are really enjoying our PE sessions – it is something the children look forward to each week!  This week we were practicing our kicking skills – we have some budding footballers!

Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ This week we looked at a book called ‘The Great Big Book of Families.’  We loved having the pictures of our families on the table to write a sentence about.  If you haven’t yet posted a family photograph on Tapestry, you still have time and we can print them out next week!

In our Maths carpet sessions, we have been looking at numbers 3 and 4!  We have been looking at what numbers mean and how we can show numbers – both in written form and in pictures.  We’ve also looked at a 100 square to see where we can find the numbers 3 and 4 and what those number were.  Some of our Mathematicians can read numbers such as 43, 54 etc so it was fantastic to share a 100 square with them!

We are doing very well in our phonics sessions in Reception too.  We looked at s and d this week and talked about all of the things that begin with these sounds.  We then listened to Fred sound out words with these sounds in (m – a – d etc) and had to blend the sounds together to make the word.  This was tricky at first for us all but with lots of practice we are getting the hang of it!  We will add the new sheets to the phonics folders every Thursday and send them home again on a Friday so please ensure they are in the children’s bags!

  Next week’s Learning –

11.10.21

Next week, we are going to be using the book ‘Fletcher and the Falling Leaves’.  We are going to go on a walk around the school grounds to see what the colours of the leaves are.  We will be looking at the different colours for different seasons – please ensure you have a look at the ‘Home Learning’ page as we will be asking you to have a look in your local area too.

In Maths, we are going to continue to look at numbers 3 and 4 but introduce the concept of bigger and smaller.  We will also be looking at recording a number sentence (so 3 + 1 = 4) and we will be looking at the pairs of numbers that make 4.

 Stars of the Week!

This week we have chosen…

Sparrow Class – Robyn and Frankie

Wren Class – Joey and Eric

Well done to you all!

Messages for Parents – 11.10.21

Please can we remind you to label jumpers / cardigans and also coats.

Can we also kindly request that if your child has not yet learnt to tie their own laces, to provide them with shoes that they can take off and put on themselves.

We know that all of our Sparrow and Wren friends are getting very tired.  There are only a couple more weeks before half term so we hope we can all keep on going until then!  Hopefully they will all get to rest and recuperate over the weekend!  Have a lovely weekend everyone, we will see you next week!

This Week’s Learning – 27.9.21

We have had another wonderful week in Early Years!  The children are amazing us every day and every week!  Their contributions to carpet sessions and their focus and concentration during independent learning is remarkable – we are so proud of them and we know you are too!

Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ This week we have now finished looking at the book ‘Our Class is a Family’  - it was a beautiful book and has been key to making those early relationships between children and adults and also between children and their peers.

This week, we used the book to talk about our classroom family and our home family.  We looked at similarities and differences between our family and the classroom family!

In our Maths carpet sessions, we have been looking at numbers 1 and 2!  We have been looking at what numbers mean and how we can show numbers – both in written form and in pictures.  We’ve also looked at 1 more and 2 more for bigger numbers - even beginning to look at how we might record a number sentence!

This week we began our first Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics sessions with our Reception friends.  Again, we were so incredibly proud of our children and the progress we have already started to see!  The Reception children will be bringing home their phonics folders soon – please keep an eye out for the memo on Tapestry about these!

Both our Reception and also our Nursery friends will be continuing Phase 1 phonics – Phase 1 phonics is about distinguishing sounds.  We have loved our ‘guess the sound’ games and will continue these and other fun games throughout the year!

  Next week’s Learning –  4.10.21

Next week, we are going to be using the book ‘The Great Big Book of Families’.  We will use our wonderful drawings of our families (thank you to all who uploaded these to Tapestry!) and we are going to think about sentences to describe our family.  Our Nursery friends will start with saying sentences about our family and our Reception friends will begin to look at writing sentences.  We have a wonderful range of abilities in our classes and are excited to see how everyone approaches this task!

In Maths, we are going to be looking at numbers 3 and 4!  We will be looking at objects that specifically relate to these numbers – a tricycle, a square etc.  We will be counting out objects up to 4 and talking about how we count accurately by touching each object as we count them.   We will extend some of our learners to find number 3 on a 100 sqaure and ask them what they notice!  We will also be extending some of our learners to record number sentences about number 3 and number 4.

Class teacher awards – 24.9.2021

This week we have chosen

Sparrow Class – Logan and Lili

Wren Class – Elianna and Maisie

Well done to you all!

Messages for Parents – 1.10.21

Please can we ask all parents and carers to do a double check of names in jumpers and cardigans.  We have had a jumper and a cardigan go missing – both of which have names in.  We do have a spare jumper and a couple of cardigans left in the classrooms without names so we will be happy to swap them over if your child has come home with the wrong one!

Please can we ask you to label jumpers / cardigans and also coats – there are some very similar coats and some of the children struggle to tell which is theirs!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and are able to stay safe in the rain!

This Week’s Learning – 20.9.21

Another end of another very busy week!  Both Nursery and Reception friends are settling in well and are learning the rules and routines of the classrooms.  Lots of writing and painting has taken place this week – clearly we have some very creative children so will be doing our best to facilitate this in our inside and outside learning environments!

Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ This week we linked our learning to the book ‘Our Class is a Family.’

We used the book to talk about feelings we may experience in the classrooms, how our friends and our teachers will look after us, play with us and work hard with us too.  It really is a lovely book and it helped to open up discussion about how we might miss our families when we are at school – and that it is ok to feel a bit sad when we think about missing them.  We talked about who could help us to feel better – and the unanimous answer was our friends and family!  We have been looking out for our friends and helping them to have a fantastic day, every day!

In our Maths carpet sessions, we have been looking at groups of objects and comparing which has more or less.  We even progressed on to estimating how many in a group – which was very impressive indeed!

Our nursery rhyme of the week was Wheels on the Bus – lots of us knew this song very well.  It linked wonderfully to our work on families as it talked about babies, Mummies, Daddies etc.

We did a longer PE session this week now that we are all more settled.  We looked at team work and played with the parachute – there are some lovely photographs on the Blog and on Tapestry!

  Next week’s Learning –

27.9.21

Next week, we are going to continue to look at our book ‘Our Class is a Family.’  We will be using the book to look at all of our friends in our classes, ensuring we know all their names and for our Reception friends, we will even be looking at the letter sounds in our names.

In Maths, we are going to be looking closely at the number 1.  We will be looking at finding 1 object and starting our counting with number 1.  We will use this to extend some of our learners to find 1 more or 1 less than a number – especially numbers such as 19, 29 etc when it is not always clear what comes next!  Then to extend some of our budding mathematicians in our Reception classes, we will start to look at how we record numbers and how we can record 1 more than a number.

Class teacher awards – 24.9.2021

Each week we choose two children from each class that have really impressed us. These children will be our Stars of the Week, and will either be sent home with a special certificate following the Star of the Week assembly on Friday.

This Week’s Learning – 13.9.21

Our Nursery friends joined us this week and our Reception friends stayed for lunch and the whole day!  It has been a very busy week for all of our Early Years friends but everyone has really impressed us with their attitudes to learning and kindness to everyone!

Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ This week we continued to link our learning to the book ‘I am too absolutely small for school’.

We used the book to look at our classroom rules: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Honest and Be Polite.  We talked about how Charlie and Lola demonstrated these rules and also how we can in class.  We had lots of fantastic discussions about what each rule looks like.

In our Maths carpet sessions, we have been singing the song ‘1 elephant went out to play’ – we also used BSL to support our singing!  Then our Reception friends also looked at 1 more for numbers up to 5 – they were fantastic at this and even used this language when playing in the classrooms and outside!

This week, we have noticed that the Writing Area inside was very popular – so we added more cards and stickers to support their interests.  Next week, we are now going to set up another Mark Making area next to the Construction Area – we love learning about what our Sparrow and Wren friends enjoy the most and then adapting their classrooms to include these likes!

The water trays outside were very popular, even in the rain!  So this week we added sponges and bubbles and we had a wonderful car wash session!  Please pop over to ‘gallery’ to see some of the photographs from this activity and the week’s learning.

  Next week’s Learning –

20.9.21

Next week, we are going to be looking at a lovely book called ‘My Class is a Family.’  It’s a wonderful story about how our teachers and friends are like a family to us – we are going to use this book to help learn the names of all of our Early Years family and to build relationships between adults and peers.

In Maths, we are going to look at counting groups of objects up to 5. To extend some of our learners, we are going to be looking at which group has more and how they know that.  In the Maths Area, we are going to have opportunities for grouping objects, and to extend some of our learners we are going to have opportunities to write numbers.

Our Nursery Rhyme of the week is ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ – this is usually a very popular song so I am sure they will come home singing it to you!

This Week’s Learning – 6.9.21

Throughout the week, we welcomed our new Reception children and introduced them to their new teachers, classroom and routines!  All of the children have settled well and we are very proud of them and their learning attitudes.

Our topic this half term is ‘All About Me.’ This week we linked our learning to the book I am too absolutely small for school’.

We used the book to look at Lola’s worries about starting school and talked about some of the worries we may have.  We also used the book to introduce areas and activities around the classroom – such as counting in the Maths area and writing secret messages in the writing area!

In our Maths carpet sessions, we have been singing the song ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5, once I caught a fish alive’ – which we were thrilled to see so many of the children knew this song well!  In our Maths area outside we have numbered fish that the children have had fun playing with.

The children have also been busy exploring and playing in the outside areas – the water tray and the home corners have been very popular!

Below is a message from Mrs Green

I am delighted to inform you that over the Easter holidays we have installed 20 bicycle storage hoops up on the top of the grass area by the existing covered bicycle Storage just through the KS2 gate. This was possible due to receiving £500 pounds funding from TFL to promote cycling to school.

If your child wishes to cycle to school, then they may park their bicycle in this area only, no bicycles are to be taken down to classrooms. Please ensure your child wears a cycle helmet and has a lock to secure their bike whilst on school premises, as the school accepts no liability for loss or damage to personal property brought onto school property.

Thank you for your continued support during these unusual times. We have loved seeing all the photographs and videos of the children working at home so please continue to post them on Tapestry.

Just a reminder that we are asking that every pupil hand in one piece of work each day so that we have a record of attendance for pupils learning at home.  In nursery, we have highlighted on the timetable and remote learning planning in green what we would like you to upload to Tapestry each day – but we love seeing all your

Photographs and videos so 1 a day is just the minimum!

Please remember that we are live on Tapestry between 1-2pm every day and checking the emails regularly to support with any concerns and help that is required.

Sutton Libraries have a Facebook page where they are sharing stories and rhyme time sessions. They also give up to date information about how you can order and collect books for your child or for yourself! This is a great resource for all particularly during this current lockdown. Please find a link below which we hope you will find very useful!

We are a nut free school due to having staff members and pupils with severe nut allergies. Please do not give your child any food or products containing nuts as these allergies are also air borne not just when consumed.

If you are sending in sweets for a birthday, please ensure these are individually wrapped and do not contain nuts.

Please can we ask you to supply a small pack of tissues for your child - now the weather has changed we are getting lots of running noses, we would like to help the children develop independence so having a small pack of tissues in their bag will really support this!

You can find it at the bottom of this weeks blog.

We have loved all of the farm animal play this week! We have been cleaning the muddy animals, using animals and natural resources in playdough and painting with feathers!

We have also really enjoyed using the message centre this week and have been making marks in oats and mud and also finding secret messages!

In Maths this week we have been looking at positional language. We enjoyed putting the bears on top of boxes, underneath cups, behind a chair and next to each other!

This week we linked our play to all of our favourite toys in nursery!

The children had the Barbie dolls and the baby dolls out – they enjoyed clothing and feeding them!

We had lots of washing up to do in class too – this is one of their favourite things to help with in the classroom!  The children especially enjoyed cleaning the carpet time spots!  They gave them a good scrub in the water tray and then hung them up to dry!

To link with Autumn this week, we had pumpkins to explore.  At the beginning of the week, we hammered golf tees into the pumpkins and explored how hard they were.  Then later in the week we scooped out the seeds and the flesh to give to the birds and squirrels in our nursery garden.  We hope they enjoy them!

In Maths this week we have been counting different objects.  We have been practising our counting every day when we see what number the day is, so this week it was great to put our counting skills into action!

Outside, we are going to become builders!  We have bricks and ‘cement’ and we are going to build houses and roads!

In the water trays we are going to clean the toys!  The children love sponges and soapy waters – so we are going to get all our toys nice and clean ready for the half term break!

We also enjoyed completing lots of household chores!  We absolutely loved doing the washing up and made sure all of the cups and plates were gleaming clean.  We did the washing, wrote out shopping lists and swept the kitchen – we were very good helpers!

In Maths this week we have been looking at different shapes.  We grouped shapes together, matched the pairs and talked about the sizes of shapes.  We even made up a shape hunt by hiding the shapes around the garden!

Next Week’s Learning – wb 12.10.2020

We will be decorating elephant biscuits in different colours just like Elmer!  We will be creating lots of colourful paintings, drawings and models for Elmer week!

For iPad time we will be taking photographs of our favourite activities around the classroom.

In our Maths areas we will be counting to 10 with lots of different colourful objects.

Messages for Parents – wb 12.10.2020

Please can we remind everyone to ensure you have spare clothing in your child’s bag.  Toilet accidents of happen at this age because the children start to become really engrossed in their learning activities – so do not worry if your previously dry child has a few accidents while they are adjusting to the new environment.  Also, the children often engage in messy play – we provide painting aprons but children always seem to get the part not covered!  Our class this year are a huge fans of the mud kitchen – so much amazing learning happens here but is it a messy task!  Please pop in some spare clothes in their bag so we can keep them warm and dry once they have finished playing!

It has been fantastic to see photographs uploaded on to Tapestry from home!  We allocate time each week for the children to share these with their friends. Don’t worry if they don’t get added to or commented on immediately, we will add them to their journals once the child has shared it in class!  If you haven’t yet added your family photo or home photographs to Tapestry yet, please feel free to do this and we will share with the children during the week!    We also put reminders on Tapestry so please check your emails to see if you have been sent a memo from us!

A reminder that if you need to contact us for any reason and we can’t chat at the gate, please email us on the class email address.  This will be checked every morning before the children come into class. The email address is ladybirdclass@cirrustrust.onmicrosoft.com

This Week’s Learning – wb 28.09.2020

Our topic this term is ‘All About Me’

This week we linked our play to the books ‘That’s Not My…’

The children enjoyed the different books and were always keen to feel the different textures in the books.  This prompted lots of great discussions about texture and lots of new words!

We also had our first PE lesson today!  We loved running around in the huge hall!  We had to move like different animals in the hall; run like a tiger, jump like a kangaroo, stomp like an elephant etc – we were are brilliant at this!

We also enjoyed lots of mark making and used lots of different materials to draw in – shaving foam, fairy dust and sand for example!  Please have a look on the Gallery for photos!

In Maths this week we have been counting different objects.  We found lots of counters, stones, people, cars etc and we counted how many we had!

Next Week’s Learning – wb 5.10.2020

Next week, we will be looking at the book ‘This is our house’ by Michael Rosen.  We will use the book to look at different houses, similarities between ourselves and others and also we will discuss the feeling of ‘belonging’.

We’ve added some new items to our home corner for this week – we will be doing the washing and the cooking for our family and talk about who helps with these tasks at home.

In our playdough area we have added muffin trays, cake cases and scented playdough and we will be talking about cooking at home and what foods we like to eat!

In our Maths areas we will be looking at shapes.  We will be talking about the sizes of different shapes and then start to describe the properties of shapes – straight sides, curved sides, pointy corners etc.

This Week’s Learning – wb 21.09.2020

Our topic this term is ‘All About Me’

This week we linked our play to the book ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julie Donaldson.

The children loved the book and enjoyed seeing all the different jungle animals in the story.  The book prompted a great discussion about what a butterfly’s babies look like!  We then had lots of chats about what our Mummies and Daddies look like – do we have the same hair colour, eye colour, skin colour etc.

The children have really enjoyed all of the activities again this week but one of the most popular one was the butterfly painting!  They loved choosing their colours and textures to decorate their butterflies with.  Leaf cutting was a hit this week too!  We collected leaves from around the garden and hole punched them, cut them with scissors and glued them to our pages – it was clearly great fun!

In Maths this week we have been asking the children to count out amounts for us – “can you give me 3 tigers…”  this has been really interesting and it would be great if you could continue this at home!  Ask them to give you 2 teddies or get 4 spoons etc.

Next Week’s Learning – wb 28.09.2020

Next week, we will be looking at the books ‘That’s Not My…’ we will start the week with the books linked to toys and then move on to the books linked to pets and animals.

We will be looking at the different textures and words to describe what something feels like.  We will be washing our toys with different sponges and scourers and we will be investigating different materials like sandpaper, bubble wrap, felt and foam.

This Week's Learning 29.6.20

This week we read the book Mr Gumpy's Outing. This book was fantastic for introducing new vocabulary - bleat, squabble etc. The children made reasoned attempts at working out the new words. We were also very impressed with their ability to recall the story in order - even remembering what Mr Gumpy said to each animal!

Mrs W created some lovely creative activities linked to the animals in the story! The children loved making the funny sheep and painting the pigs with mud!

We had some lovely messy play this week! We are really enjoying the foaming soap in our water tray - it's a great way to encourage regularly handwashing too! We also had lots of water beads in our Tuff Spots this week - the children loved the feel of them and were very inventive in how they collected them up! Water play was another big hit - we had guttering and tubes out and the children had great fun making the water travel from one tray to the other.

We are very impressed with the hard work we are seeing in phonics! In school the children are really trying hard with their letter formation and thinking of objects that begin with the sound of the week. At home you are working hard too! Victor's letter ds show amazing progression as he uses the rhymes to help him for the letters. Please keep going everyone!

I'm hearing lots of great feedback about the Busy Things website. As an LGfL school we have access to this amazing site - it has links to all areas of the curriculum from Nursery up to Year 6. If you haven't used it yet please have a look. If you need the login details to get on just send us an email and we'll pass on the details.

We love to see the photographs of you out and about too! Victor has been to a PYO this week - he picked strawberries, raspberries, broccoli.... The learning that takes place while on these adventures is huge! But most importantly - it's great fun!

We love seeing your photographs of everything you are doing while we are apart, please keep uploading to Tapestry each week!
